DICK KEYES
Biography
Dick Keyes is the Director of L’Abri Fellowship in Southborough, Massachusetts, where he and his wife, Mardi Keyes, raised their three sons. Dick holds a B.A. in History from Harvard University and an M.Div. from Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. Dick and Mardi married shortly after graduation and in 1970, they moved to Europe to work with L’Abri — spending six months in Switzerland, and eight and a half years in England (London and Greatham). During their time in London, Mardi and Dick held a multi-cultural church service out of their own home. And since 1980, they have both been on the Board of Help a Child, a charitable Christian organization providing homes, food, healthcare, education and job training to orphans and other poor children in India and Africa.
In addition to his long-term commitment to L’Abri, Dick has worked as an adjunct professor at Gordon Conwell and Westminster seminaries, and he served as a pastor of the International Presbyterian Church in London for eight years. As the author of Beyond Identity, True Heroism, Chameleon Christianity, Seeing Through Cynicism, and other works, Dick has lectured widely in the U.S., Europe, and Korea on topics of both cultural individual significance.
In 1979, the Keyes family moved to Southborough, Massachusetts, where, along with the Seagren family from the Swiss L’Abri, they opened the first residential branch of L’Abri in the United States. As is true of much of the L’Abri staff, Dick’s interests are varied and include working in the woods, rowing, and playing blues and ragtime guitar. Writing on identity, heroism and cynicism are all part of Dick’s effort to direct Christians toward a more integrated faith, as well as to articulate the claims of Jesus with a fresh perspective for a wider audience.
